Having trouble with an MP4?

The file must be playable in your browser before frames can be extracted. Standard H.264 MP4 files usually work best. If the video will not play in a normal browser tab, export it again with a common H.264 setting and try once more.

FPS or Frame Count: Which Should You Use?

The two batch modes create different results. Frame count gives you a predictable number of images across the full MP4. FPS follows a time interval, which is useful when you want regular snapshots from the beginning of a clip.

Frame count

Choose this when you want 10, 20, or another fixed number of representative images spread over the complete video.

FPS

Choose this when regular timing matters, such as one image every second. The tool stops at 150 images, so a long video may only cover its opening portion at a high FPS.

First frame

JPG or PNG

JPG is usually smaller for photos and thumbnails. Use this tool to convert MP4 to PNG when text, graphics, or interface details need lossless output.

What to Check When an MP4 Will Not Load

The tool accepts MP4 and M4V files up to 1 GB. It exports the decoded video frame size without intentionally shrinking the image, but very large or high-resolution videos use more browser memory and may take longer to process.

Standard H.264 MP4 files are usually the safest choice. If the file does not load, first check whether it plays in a normal browser tab. If it cannot play there, export it again with a common H.264 setting and try again.

Start with a small sample

For a long or 4K MP4, try First frame or a low Frame count before requesting a larger sequence.

Keep the decoded size

Images use the video dimensions exposed by the browser. The tool does not add a thumbnail-sized resize step.

Check playback first

If the MP4 cannot play in your browser, frame extraction cannot read it either. Re-export the source in a browser-friendly format.

Quality

MP4 to JPG in High Quality

Your images keep the resolution of your video. There is no automatic shrinking: an HD MP4 produces HD images, and a 4K MP4 produces 4K images.

The JPG quality setting only controls how much the image is compressed. Lower quality means smaller files that are quick to share; higher quality keeps more detail. If you want no compression at all, choose PNG. One thing to keep in mind: very large videos use more memory and take longer to process, so start with a small sample and increase it once you are happy with the results.
